NYC Traffic Cameras Are Nikon DSLRs — Perfect for Thieves

Ever wonder what's inside a traffic enforcement camera? In New York City, they're Nikon DSLRs connected to a trigger mechanism.

We learned this from reports of two Brooklyn residents who were arrested this week for allegedly stealing 22 red light cameras off of street poles! The New York Post reported that the suspects used their own cherry-picker truck and made off with $88,000 worth of stolen gear. WABC-TV has more in this video:

The camera seen in the news video looks like a Nikon D2X, an older DSLR model. The thieves were allegedly selling them at B&H Photo to support a heroin addiction. The city says it's taking steps to make the cameras harder to steal. Locking the boxes perhaps?

Don'tcha think they could have stopped at 21 cameras??  Got a little greedy or they could have gotten away with it!! haha.
