New Orleans Supercross Lites Results 2012

Darryn Durham finally made good on his end of the bargain with Monster Pro Circuit Kawasaki owner Mitch Payton. The likable rider was drafted onto the powerhouse team and given one of the coveted KX250F race bikes for 2012, but until now his results have been below expectations despite flashes of speed. Durham secured is first career Supercross Lites victory in front of more than 33,000 fans, and he was joined by teammate Blake Baggett in second. Geico Honda pilot Justin Bogle was third with teammate Justin Barcia taking fourth and earning the Eastern Region Supercross Lites title for the second year in a row.
“This is at the top of the list,” said Durham. “I’m speechless. It was a great race and I couldn’t have done it without my team. I’m super excited, but just don’t know what to say. I had a rough practice and heat race, but got great start. I think I led all the laps, but I don’t even know.”
The Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot Award went to Eleven10 Mods Honda rider Alex Martin. The Minnesota rider slipped into the lead straight out of the gate with heat race-winner Barcia in second and Durham in third. Durham moved past both Hondas and took the lead on Lap 2. The Kawasaki rider never relinquished his position for the rest of the 15-lap event. Martin had troubles on Lap 3 when he slipped to sixth, and he continued dropping back in the pack, eventually DNFing.
Malcolm Stewart had a turn in second place aboard his JDR J-Star KTM before crashing out of the race on Lap 5. Barcia was riding consistently with more focus on wrapping up his second consecutive SX Lites title rather than winning the race. Bam Bam allowed Baggett and Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen to pass before settling into a safe rhythm. Bogle, who was in seventh until Lap 4, surged toward the front and nipped the German on Lap 9. The move put the CRF rider on the podium in his rookie season. Meanwhile, Barcia’s efforts paid off, missing the trophy celebration in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, but securing another championship for the Geico Honda team.
“Tonight is mind blowing,” said Barcia. “To win two championships feels amazing. It was a tough season at times, but it took a lot of hard work and dedication to get here. I couldn't have done it without everyone on my team. This is an awesome feeling.”
With the title secure in the Geico camp, the battle raged for second place in the championship. Durham’s win put him into a tie with Roczen at 143 points apiece, and it also helps give him the nod in the tie-bre aker. Coming into the Big Easy Blake Wharton was sitting in second overall, but a dismal race (14th) on his Rockstar Energy Yoshimura Suzuki leaves him with 142 points and a bitter taste in his mouth as the season heads back to the West Coast. The Texan will carry the sting of dropping two positions at the very end until the East/West shootout in Las Vegas.
