Monster Energy Cup - Congrats Ryan Villopoto for Winning the Million

By petemaster5000 on October 19, 2011 4:06 PM

Congrats to Ryan Villopoto for winning the first ever, Monster Million, at the Las Vegas Monster Energy Cup.

This was the first ever race of it's kind.  The track, designed by Ricky Carmichael, and Jeremy McGrath was new and different.  It had the combination of high speed outdoor motocross sections, as well as tricky, tight rhythm sections like the indoor supercross tracks.

I had a great time watching my Minnesota boy, Ryan Dungey on his first ever race on the KTM.  He finished 1st looking really strong in his heat race, but couldn't quite keep up with the insane fast, smooth, and perfect ride by Villopoto.  RV is absolutely amazing to watch.  He is smoooth as butta, and fast as f***.

What a fun day of racing.  Now we just have 11 weeks until the Supercross season starts at Anaheim in January.

Rest well racers but stay in shape, and have a good break.  See you back at the gate real soon!

Monster Energy Cup Pre-Race Press Event Showcases Top SuperX/MotoX Racers

By petemaster5000 on October 14, 2011 6:55 PM

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (October 13, 2011) - A pre-race press conference was held today at Sam Boyd Stadium to preview Saturday night's inaugural Monster Energy Cup, featuring supercross legend Ricky Carmichael, Best Trick competitor Kyle Loza, Super-Mini competitor Adam Cianciarulo and Amateur All-Star competitor Thomas Covington as well as open class riders Mike Alessi (Rockwell Suzuki), Justin Brayton (Team Honda Muscle Milk), Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM), Kevin Windham (GEICO Honda), Josh Hansen (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki) and Ryan Villopoto (Monster Energy Kawasaki).

Ricky Carmichael:

"This race is a great opportunity for the sport and riders. When you're racing and caught up in the moment aiming for $1 million, we forget about the tremendous exposure this race is getting, which is certainly going to open the door for opportunities down the road for everybody. The sky is the limit with this one."

Ryan Villopoto:

"There are definitely some big jumps out here. We've been testing out the 2012 KX 450F, so we are in really good shape. It's good to go out there and see where everybody is at."

Kevin Windham:

"No matter how much you prepare for a race like this, you just don't know what to expect because it's so different. There are so many sections that can make for some exciting racing. Really, anybody can win a 10-lap event, so it should be interesting."

Justin Brayton:

Mike Alessi:

"I feel really good on the new bike and am excited to get it on the hybrid track and see how we do. I definitely would like to take the trophy and million bucks home. As a rider that has to cover most of the finances for my team, winning a $1 million would be a tremendous help."

Josh Hansen:

"It's going to be a good race with some of the greatest riders. I'm stoked about the big jumps and technical sections. With a $1 million on the line, anything goes."

Marvin Musquin:

"I've been practicing on the supercross track with Ryan Dungey testing suspension setup, so I am ready to battle the hybrid track."

Kyle Loza:

"I'm psyched for this "Best Trick" competition. I missed my chance to showcase the "bike flip" because of an injury, so I'm ready to give it a shot. The $40,000 prize is a big deal. Four guys are going home super mad and one is going home amped."

Adam Cianciarulo:

"To be riding on a track designed by two of the sport's greatest riders is in itself is awesome. Mixing in aspects of live television coverage on SPEED and racing in front of a packed house really makes this a great race for a younger rider."

Thomas Covington:

"I've been training really hard at the Kawi track for this race, so we will see how it pays off. I'm really going to benefit from the experience I'll receive, because it's going to allow me to get a feel for what it's like competing in supercross."

The unique hybrid track will consist of supercross/motocross terrain and will have a tremendous motocross-style influence, making it unlike any other stadium race in the world. This track will be the perfect blend of supercross and motocross combined and created into the ultimate battleground. The Monster Energy Cup posts a $250,000 purse, awarding the winner with a $100,000 check, and for the "first time ever" $1 Million will be paid to a rider that wins all three main events.

Dungey to race Monster Energy Cup

Ryan Dungey has had only two weeks to test his new Factory KTM, but he claims to be ready for this weekend's Monster Energy Cup in Las Veg

By B.J. Smith - ESPN.com

Count 2010 AMA Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey as 'in' for this weekend. Dungey, who announced his switch to KTM on October 1, has been testing with the team in Southern California for less than two weeks. This afternoon he made an unexpected announcement to race in the Monster Energy Cup this Saturday night in Las Vegas at Sam Boyd Stadium.

"I am feeling confident enough to compete and am really eager to see where I stack up against the competition," Dungey said. "It's a last minute decision to race this event but the team is behind me 100% and I am excited to make my debut on the bike."

The addition of Dungey comes as very welcome news to the ticket holders and promoters. The lineup of the MEC has received heavy blows this week with former AMA Supercross Champions, James Stewart and Chad Reed and 2011 Supercross Lites East Champion Justin Barcia all dropping from competition.

KTMRyan Dungey's Factory KTM is ready for competition.

Dungey's decision echoes that of one Ricky Carmichael made in 2004. After only a few weeks of testing his new Suzuki RM250 he decided to race the US Open of Supercross in October in Las Vegas rather than wait until January for round one of the AMA Supercross series. The weekend wasn't without problems and Ricky was able to let his new team know exactly what his expectations were. The experience proved valuable for Carmichael and Suzuki who went on to win the AMA Supercross and Motocross titles in 2005 and 2006.

The announcement even came a as a surprise to KTM's Team Manager, Roger DeCoster, who, ironically, was also Carmichael's team manager in 2004 when RC made his Suzuki debut.

"We didn't expect him to race after only two weeks on the bike," DeCoster said. "But he will use the event to help gauge where he stands speed-wise against the competition. It will also give the team a racing opportunity to test different setups with the bike prior to the opening round of the Supercross."

Dungey has won every major AMA Supercross/Motocross championship and became the first rider to win the coveted Supercross class and 450cc Motocross class championship as a rookie in 2010. In the 2011 Monster Energy Supercross championship, Dungey earned one win and 12 podium finishes en route to third place overall. He has a career seven Supercross class wins and 17 podium finishes.
