Chad Reed Crash at Dallas

By petemaster5000 on February 20, 2012 6:43 PM

Bad news regarding Chad Reed just came out via his twitter.  Official tweet from Chad:

"Well I spent the day in the hospital yesterday here's the damage...
2 broken ribs, broken spinous T6. Torn ACL and fractured tib fib."

No timetable has been set on his return. Get well soon Chad!

Aussie Chad Reed's hopes of claiming the 2012 AMA Supercross title have taken a hit after an ugly crash at Cowboys Stadium in Texas.

Reed went into the seventh round of the series second in the championship but has now lost that position after failing to finish the main event in Arlington.

Reed and Villopoto had pulled a gap on the field and were engaged in a see-saw battle for the lead when the crash happened.

Reed has a moment heading into the whoops on lap seven and bounced over the handlebars. As he and the bike tumbled to a halt Reed's leg became caught in the bike, injuring his left knee.

Reed now trails points leader and reigning champion Ryan Villopoto by 30 points in third place, with Ryan Dungey 13 points behind Villopoto in second.

Jay Leno Makes Crass Joke About Motorcycle Accident Before Tragedy Kills Two

By petemaster5000 on October 27, 2011 5:55 PM

Not Jay Leno's finest hour.

At the annual Love Ride for charity motorcycle rally in Glendale, California on Sunday, the talk show host and comedian, 61, made some distasteful jokes that tragically became true.

The Los Angeles Times reports that prior to the rally Leno jokingly complained about safety measures taken during the rally .  "Every year, [the organizer] says, 'Drive safe."  "I'm gonna say, 'Don't drive safe.'  I wanna see somebody go down.  So it'll be fun.  I want it to be in front or behind me and see a whole row of bikes go down.  Get drunk, fall off the road.  We've all become too damn polite…we haven't had one incident."

Sadly, the funny man's Tongue-in-cheek wishes came true.  Two riders died after crashing into a truck during their rides.  The Los Angeles Times reports Romarino Zeri, 51, and Julie Cameron, 38 both riding for the Autism awareness charity Autism Speaks, died instantly after their collision on the Golden State 5 Freeway in Pacoima, California.

Leno's reps have denied comments on his ominous words.  However, Leno did escort another injured driver who crashed during Sunday's rally to the hospital.  But that gesture hasn't saved his reputation on the motorcycle blogs.  A fellow rider said, "[Leno] is going to feel really bad for his comments".

Motorcycle sales finally on the rise

Motorcycle sales finally on the rise

By BJ Smith
ESPN Action Sports

Chad Reed
Supercross Champion Chad Reed wasn't offered the support he needed to race the 2011 season so he started his own team.

The motorcycle industry has not been immune to the rocky economy but it finally received its first good news for unit sales in over two years. Motorcycle sales among major brands rose 7.2 percent in the first quarter of 2011, compared to the same period last year, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council's (MIC) Retail Sales Report. This report tracks sales among 18 leading brands being sold in the U.S. This was welcome news to an industry that experienced 14 years of rising sales from 1993-2006. Total sales of all new motorcycles and scooters topped the one million mark for six straight years through 2007 according to the MIC's Press Relations Manager Ty Van Hooydonk.

In February 2009 the MIC issued a release that said the off-highway motorcycle market dropped off 30 percent in 2008. While the aftermarket industry remained strong, the decline in new unit sales forced the manufacturers to cut racing budgets, which was one of the factors that led superstars like two-time AMA Supercross Champion Chad Reed and former FIM World Motocross Champion Christophe Pourcel scrambling for rides before the start of the 2011 AMA Supercross season. The OEMs simply didn't have the money to pay them. Reed formed his own team, Pourcel stayed home.

The popular scooter segment saw the biggest gain, up nearly 50 percent. Sales of dual-purpose bikes, built for on- and off-highway use and generally among the most fuel-efficient motorcycles, increased by almost 25 percent. Tire sales, a strong indicator of motorcycle use, were up as well during the first three months.

"Nothing compares to a motorcycle for combining fun with saving money," said Tim Buche, MIC president and chief executive officer. "There's no more enjoyable way to get to work and get around, and rising fuel prices have given our customers yet another great reason to ride."

Motorcycle and scooter tire sales increased 29.4 percent in the first quarter, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council's Quarterly U.S. Motorcycle Tire Sales Report, which tracks nine major tire brands. Total on-highway tire sales rose 27.5 percent, while scooter tires jumped 48.6 percent.

The MIC Owner Survey estimates that 11 million motorcycles were in use in 2009, a 5 percent increase over the 2008 motorcycle population of 10.4 million. Motorcycle miles traveled also increased 5 percent from 2008 to 2009 with a total of 27.6 billion miles. The percentage of U.S. households with at least one bike rose from 5.4 percent in 2003 to 6.8 percent in 2009.

Darwin Approves: Motorcyclist Protesting Helmet Use Dies Due to Lack of Helmet

By FTR on July 05, 2011 5:08 PM

Now this is irony!

In a case of irony even O’Henry and Darwin working together might not top, a man protesting burdensome helmet laws died as a direct result of not using one this weekend in New York.

Philip A. Contos lost control of his Harley Davidson motorcycle and hit his head while riding with 549 other anti-helmet bikers in the 11th annual Independence Ride.

Authorities said the 55-year-old’s life could have been saved had he been wearing a helmet. Of course.

The ride was organized by the American Bikers Aimed Toward Education, which states one of its main missions is to help prevent accidents through education. Guess this education doesn’t include letting bikers know that helmets reduce the likelihood of a crash fatality by 37 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

But despite being proved wrong by one of its own, American Bikers Aimed Toward Education is not changing its stance on New York’s mandatory helmet law.

“Mandatory helmet laws do nothing to prevent accidents,” ABATE states on its website.

The statistics on saving lives, however, are hard to ignore. Helmet laws are in place for at least some drivers such as minors in all of the states except Illinois, Iowa and New Hampshire.

Where helmet laws do not exist, 63 percent of fatally injured bikers were not wearing a helmet. While in states where helmet use was mandatory, that number was just 14 percent, according to saferoads.org.

And like Contos, many of the deaths could have been prevented. Helmets saved the lives of 1,829 motorcyclists in 2008. If all motorcyclists had worn helmets, an additional 823 lives could have been saved.

But not wearing a helmet could also cost you economically.

The average hospital charge for motorcyclists with serious head injuries was $43,214. This is almost three times the $15,528 hospitals charge motorcyclists with mild or no head injuries, according to saferoads.org.

Helmet deaths went down from 15-37 percent in the first year after helmet laws were enacted in Oregon, Nebraska, Texas, Washington, California and Maryland.

AZ Biker Info : New FTR Member, About Us

By AZBIKERINFO on April 20, 2011 3:03 AM

Hey I'm BIG RICH (owner/founder/webmaster)

I started AZBIKERINFO late 2009 because as a rider, I had a hard time finding important information all in one spot. I had to goto multiple websites to find good information on what was going on in the state, and around the country. So I decided I would start my own site, so that all riders in Arizona could have access to the information they needed to make informed decisions, whether its concerning new laws, where to ride, what to do this weekend, or what business's are biker friendly.  I want to support the smaller independent shops and restaurants, because if we lose the smaller shops that depend on taking care of their customers to get them to come back, our only options will be the "corporate" places, that tend to treat their customers like shit. All in all I want this site to be a place for all riders to come together for the good of Arizona. As a group we can bring tremendous change to the state! When we work together amazing things can happen, and in my experience the riding community is the best when it comes to supporting others. Just take a look at all the charity runs that take place throughout the state! Bikers have big hearts, and the passion to follow through.

If you would like to submit your event or run flyer send them to biker@cox.netThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with the information, and a link to the website or to the flyer if its posted online, or just send us a copy.

My goal is to have them posted ASAP, No need to wait for a "newsletter" or print article to come out... get your information out NOW.
