Ryan Dungey OUT at Daytona

Ryan Dungey won't be racing in the Daytona Supercross tomorrow night, the Red Bull KTM rider crashing the week leading up to the St. Louis Supercross at his training facility in Florida and suffering a broken collarbone. Despite the break, Dungey finished second in St. Louis, but this week he opted to undergo surgery to have the collarbone plated.
Dungey, who is currently second in the Supercross Series point standings, suffered what was initially diagnosed to be a cracked collarbone when he slid out in a turn and landed on his shoulder while practicing prior to the St. Louis Supercross. Dungey was sore, but still managed to finish second in St. Louis. Further medical evaluation this week, however, showed that the collarbone was broken and Dungey opted to have surgery to speed his recovery on Tuesday
"This is hard for everyone on the team," said team manager Roger DeCoster in a release. "Ryan has done an amazing job adapting to a completely new bike this year. Through the process he has won two Supercross races and has finished on the podium at seven of nine races. He was well in the thick of the championship hunt at the midway point in the series.
"It is often heard around the pits that Ryan needs to get more aggressive and tougher on the track; I am guilty of this prediction myself. But after what he accomplished last week racing to a close second with a broken collarbone; my doubts about how tough he is are well and truly gone. We knew he was hurting, but we did not realize his injury was that extensive. His gutsy performance in St. Louis and determination to keep racing despite his injury is a testament to his dedication to the team."

KTM and Ryan Dungey have only been competing together in the AMA Supercross for a couple of weeks, but the Austrian manufacturer has already claimed its first win. Ryan Dungey stood at the top of the podium last night in Phoenix after capturing his first win of the season and KTM's first Supercross victory in its history.
"This was a big step in right direction for KTM," said Dungey. "They've been behind me the whole way and believed in me. We've come a long way since the off-season, but there's still a lot of racing to go. I got off to a great start and (moved) into the lead early, which made it nice on myself. If it wasn't for all these people (at KTM) working their butts off every week, this wouldn't happen, so I owe this all to them."
Dungey won last night's race from start to finish while his main title contenders suffered difficulties throughout the race. A first lap crash by Davi Millsaps brought Ryan Villopoto to the back of the pack. Chad Reed and James Stewart both had bad starts and finished the first lap in the middle of the pack.
"This was a big step in right direction for KTM," said Dungey. "They've been behind me the whole way and believed in me. Villopoto was able to fight his back onto the podium behind Dungey and Jake Weimer, while Reed took 5th and Stewart took 8th.
Dungey and Villopoto are now tied at the top with 45 points apiece.

So far, the 2012 AMA Monster Energy Supercross season has been good for dudes named Ryan. For that matter, so have the previous two seasons.
After defending series champion Ryan Villopoto opened his title defense with a win in Anaheim last week, Ryan Dungey captured Saturday night's main event at Chase Field in Phoenix.
Dungey moved to a new team this year (KTM) after winning the 2010 championship with Suzuki, and Saturday's victory was the first Supercross win for the organization. The Ryans – Dungey and Villopoto – are now tied atop the Supercross point standings after two rounds.
Jake Weimer – who finished fifth last week – earned a surprising runner-up finish while Villopoto was third. Villopoto's run was impressive, as he started in the back and came through the field.
Kevin Windham and Chad Reed rounded out the top five. James Stewart was eighth, marking his second consecutive disappointing result since joining Joe Gibbs Racing's SX team.
Trey Canard made his return to the circuit after a broken collarbone (he missed last week's opener) and finished eighth.
The series moves to Dodger Stadium next Saturday night.

Monster Energy Cup - Congrats Ryan Villopoto for Winning the Million
By petemaster5000 on October 19, 2011 4:06 PM
Congrats to Ryan Villopoto for winning the first ever, Monster Million, at the Las Vegas Monster Energy Cup.
This was the first ever race of it's kind. The track, designed by Ricky Carmichael, and Jeremy McGrath was new and different. It had the combination of high speed outdoor motocross sections, as well as tricky, tight rhythm sections like the indoor supercross tracks.
I had a great time watching my Minnesota boy, Ryan Dungey on his first ever race on the KTM. He finished 1st looking really strong in his heat race, but couldn't quite keep up with the insane fast, smooth, and perfect ride by Villopoto. RV is absolutely amazing to watch. He is smoooth as butta, and fast as f***.
What a fun day of racing. Now we just have 11 weeks until the Supercross season starts at Anaheim in January.
Rest well racers but stay in shape, and have a good break. See you back at the gate real soon!

Monster Energy Cup Pre-Race Press Event Showcases Top SuperX/MotoX Racers
By petemaster5000 on October 14, 2011 6:55 PM
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (October 13, 2011) - A pre-race press conference was held today at Sam Boyd Stadium to preview Saturday night's inaugural Monster Energy Cup, featuring supercross legend Ricky Carmichael, Best Trick competitor Kyle Loza, Super-Mini competitor Adam Cianciarulo and Amateur All-Star competitor Thomas Covington as well as open class riders Mike Alessi (Rockwell Suzuki), Justin Brayton (Team Honda Muscle Milk), Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM), Kevin Windham (GEICO Honda), Josh Hansen (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki) and Ryan Villopoto (Monster Energy Kawasaki).
Ricky Carmichael:
"This race is a great opportunity for the sport and riders. When you're racing and caught up in the moment aiming for $1 million, we forget about the tremendous exposure this race is getting, which is certainly going to open the door for opportunities down the road for everybody. The sky is the limit with this one."

Ryan Villopoto:
"There are definitely some big jumps out here. We've been testing out the 2012 KX 450F, so we are in really good shape. It's good to go out there and see where everybody is at."

Kevin Windham:
"No matter how much you prepare for a race like this, you just don't know what to expect because it's so different. There are so many sections that can make for some exciting racing. Really, anybody can win a 10-lap event, so it should be interesting."

Super-Mini class competitor Adam Cianciarulo, Amateur All-Star class competitor Thomas Covington and Freestyle Motocross "Best Trick" competitor Kyle Loza discuss their respective races/competitions in the Monster Energy Cup.

Justin Brayton:
"To be racing with Team Honda Muscle Milk for the first time is really exciting for me. Winning the $1 million purse would be really neat. We've been doing a lot of testing, and after seeing the track today, I'm looking forward to giving it a shot."

Mike Alessi:
"I feel really good on the new bike and am excited to get it on the hybrid track and see how we do. I definitely would like to take the trophy and million bucks home. As a rider that has to cover most of the finances for my team, winning a $1 million would be a tremendous help."
Josh Hansen:
"It's going to be a good race with some of the greatest riders. I'm stoked about the big jumps and technical sections. With a $1 million on the line, anything goes."
Marvin Musquin:
"I've been practicing on the supercross track with Ryan Dungey testing suspension setup, so I am ready to battle the hybrid track."
Kyle Loza:
"I'm psyched for this "Best Trick" competition. I missed my chance to showcase the "bike flip" because of an injury, so I'm ready to give it a shot. The $40,000 prize is a big deal. Four guys are going home super mad and one is going home amped."
Adam Cianciarulo:
"To be riding on a track designed by two of the sport's greatest riders is in itself is awesome. Mixing in aspects of live television coverage on SPEED and racing in front of a packed house really makes this a great race for a younger rider."
Thomas Covington:
"I've been training really hard at the Kawi track for this race, so we will see how it pays off. I'm really going to benefit from the experience I'll receive, because it's going to allow me to get a feel for what it's like competing in supercross."
The unique hybrid track will consist of supercross/motocross terrain and will have a tremendous motocross-style influence, making it unlike any other stadium race in the world. This track will be the perfect blend of supercross and motocross combined and created into the ultimate battleground. The Monster Energy Cup posts a $250,000 purse, awarding the winner with a $100,000 check, and for the "first time ever" $1 Million will be paid to a rider that wins all three main events.
Tickets for the 2011 Monster Energy Cup can be purchased at the Thomas & Mack Center Box Office, UNLVtickets outlets, online at www.UNLVtickets.com, www.MonsterEnergyCup.com, or by phone at (702) 739-FANS. Tickets will be available at the Sam Boyd Stadium Box Office on the day of the event only.

Dungey to race Monster Energy Cup
By petemaster5000 on October 13, 2011 11:54 PM

KTMRyan Dungey has had only two weeks to test his new Factory KTM, but he claims to be ready for this weekend's Monster Energy Cup in Las Veg
By B.J. Smith - ESPN.com
Count 2010 AMA Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey as 'in' for this weekend. Dungey, who announced his switch to KTM on October 1, has been testing with the team in Southern California for less than two weeks. This afternoon he made an unexpected announcement to race in the Monster Energy Cup this Saturday night in Las Vegas at Sam Boyd Stadium.
"I am feeling confident enough to compete and am really eager to see where I stack up against the competition," Dungey said. "It's a last minute decision to race this event but the team is behind me 100% and I am excited to make my debut on the bike."
The addition of Dungey comes as very welcome news to the ticket holders and promoters. The lineup of the MEC has received heavy blows this week with former AMA Supercross Champions, James Stewart and Chad Reed and 2011 Supercross Lites East Champion Justin Barcia all dropping from competition.
Dungey's decision echoes that of one Ricky Carmichael made in 2004. After only a few weeks of testing his new Suzuki RM250 he decided to race the US Open of Supercross in October in Las Vegas rather than wait until January for round one of the AMA Supercross series. The weekend wasn't without problems and Ricky was able to let his new team know exactly what his expectations were. The experience proved valuable for Carmichael and Suzuki who went on to win the AMA Supercross and Motocross titles in 2005 and 2006.
The announcement even came a as a surprise to KTM's Team Manager, Roger DeCoster, who, ironically, was also Carmichael's team manager in 2004 when RC made his Suzuki debut.
"We didn't expect him to race after only two weeks on the bike," DeCoster said. "But he will use the event to help gauge where he stands speed-wise against the competition. It will also give the team a racing opportunity to test different setups with the bike prior to the opening round of the Supercross."
Dungey has won every major AMA Supercross/Motocross championship and became the first rider to win the coveted Supercross class and 450cc Motocross class championship as a rookie in 2010. In the 2011 Monster Energy Supercross championship, Dungey earned one win and 12 podium finishes en route to third place overall. He has a career seven Supercross class wins and 17 podium finishes.

Ryan Dungey Joins Redbull KTM Team
By petemaster5000 on October 06, 2011 10:23 PM
Racer Ryan Dungey signs up with the Red Bull/KTM Factory Race Team for the 2012 and 2013 AMA Pro Supercross and Motocross Championship Series…
by Red Bull, Oct 6, 2011
He may only be a tender 21 years old, but Ryan Dungey has already accomplished every career goal he has set for himself. In 2009, the American rider won the AMA Supercross Lites Western Regional Title and followed that up with the AMA Pro Motocross Championship 250cc class crown. That same year, he competed in the 2009 Motocross des Nations where he was one of three members of the winning US Team.

In 2010, he became the first rider in history to win both the AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross Championship in his rookie year before again going on to lead the 2010 Motocross des Nations team to victory. Most recently, in mid-September, he captured yet another Motocross des Nations victory in France.
“I am excited to start something new and am ready for the challenge."
And now, Ryan is taking another huge leap forward in his career by signing up to the Red Bull/KTM Factory Race Team: “I’m looking forward to riding for the new Red Bull/KTM team and working again with Roger [DeCoster, Red Bull/KTM Team Manager],” said Ryan. “I am excited to start something new and am ready for the challenge.
“I like the way that KTM has backed Roger since he made the switch last year and I appreciate KTM’s goal of working hard to develop their race team to earn championships. I am making this switch to win races and work toward getting that championship for KTM.”
It’s a switch that’s being welcomed by the hard-working Red Bull/KTM team, with Roger DeCoster returning the love: “I am really happy to have Ryan Dungey join our team,” said DeCoster. “He and I have worked together for several years so we know each other well. Our past should help us get the best out of each other and put us in position to be legit championship contenders in the big bike class.”
The well-decorated rider’s first official race with the Red Bull/KTM Factory Team will be the opening round of the AMA Pro Supercross Championship Series on January 7, 2012, where he'll race the KTM 450 SX-F in the premier Supercross class.

Motocross of Nations 2011: Saturday's MX action and qualifying
By petemaster5000 on September 17, 2011 6:18 PM
Saturday's Qualifying at the 2011 MX of Nations in France. The Motocross of Nations at St. Jean d'Angely, France is the most prestigious MX race of the year. In today's Qualifying Races it was the Americans: Ryan Dungey (MX1 class), Blake Bagget (MX2 class), and Ryan Villopoto (Open class) all led every lap of their respective motos. USA dominated in an almost unbelievable fashion, thus scoring 2 points for the day.
The Italian team surprised everyone with a second best overall for the day and scoring 4 points. Italy's Antonio Cairoli gave Ryan Dungey everything he could handle in the MX1 qualifier, finishing 2nd on the day behind Team USA's captain. The host country's Team France, finished third overall for the day, with Chrisophe Pourcel finishing 3rd in MX1, Marvin Musquin 2nd in MX2 and Gautier Paulin 3rd in the Open class. They received 6 points on the day. France is one of the favorites to end USA's reign as MXoN Champions.

MXON: Team USA In To Win
By FTR on September 15, 2011 5:42 PM

Team USA will be competing for its seventh consecutive victory at the "Olympics of Motocross", which has been running, without interruption, since 1947. Team USA is the all-time leader in victories with 21 since 1981 and are the heavy favorites this year.
Villopoto and Dungey have been on three MXoN winning teams but never as teammates. The two went to war in these years Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship and it’s the first time since Jeff Emig and Jeremy McGrath battled in the 1996 AMA 250cc Championship that two American riders who were locked in a close class championship battle were chosen to represent Team USA.
"As demonstrated by their performances this summer, these three riders are among the best that the United States has to offer," AMA spokesman Kevin Crowther said. "We're confident they will do their country proud at this prestigious event."
The team event combines the individual finishes of all three riders with each rider competing in two motos. The worst score of the six finishes is thrown out. Even though each country is competing for the Chamberlain Trophy, Villopoto said the event feels like USA vs. The World.
"Once we go over there we have a target on our back as a team," he said. "We've won it so many times and when we go overseas it's their time to show what they have. There's more pressure and it feels like it's us three against everyone else."
Blake Baggett is the lone rookie on the team. With five wins in nine rounds in 2011, the 250 class rider finished third in the AMA MX points behind Great Britain's, Dean Wilson and South Africa's Tyla Rattray. Baggett said he has no idea what to expect.
"Ryan (Dungey) talked to me about it," he said. "No worries, just ride like you do all the time. Do the best you can and it will be ours. “He also said he can't stress the 'all or nothing' strategy of winning this event. "Never give up. Trey Canard crashed in both of his motos last year. He could have given up and because he didn't give we won it in 2010."
Originally scheduled for September 24-25, the event was moved up one week so it didn't coincide with the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The September 17-18 weekend falls just one week after the conclusion of the AMA Motocross Championship at Pala Raceway, giving Team USA a logistical obstacle to overcome in preparation. "It's going to be a quick turnaround," Dungey said. "I think we're going to have to ship bikes before the season is over with. It's quick but nothing we can't handle."
The last time the event was held in Saint Jean D'Angely, France, in 2000, Team USA won with Ricky Carmichael, Travis Pastrana, and Ryan Hughes representing.
