2012 AMA Supercross Results

Spoiler Alert: 2012 AMA Supercross results from Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, listed below

The sixth round of the 2012 AMA Supercross Championship got underway before almost 59,000 fans Saturday evening at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, with the typical battles up front.

But when the 20-lap race was complete, it would be Monster Energy Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto who took the win, his third this season (Anaheim I, Anaheim II). Joining Villopoto on the San Diego podium was Two-Two Motorsports Honda's Chad Reed and Red Bull KTM's Ryan Dungey.

Taking the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot was Yoshimura Suzuki's Brett Metcalfe, who was followed by Villopoto and the other Monster Energy Kawasaki rider, Jake Weimer. But on the second lap, Villopoto grabbed the lead with Weimer in tow, leaving Metcalfe in second.

Meanwhile behind the top three, there was a three-man race between Reed, JGRMX Yamaha's James Stewart and Dungey. Reed charged toward the front, eventually passing Metcalfe and Weimer. Shortly after, Weimer lost third to Metcalfe.

By mid race, Stewart made his way up to third, but crashed out on the whoops. Dungey would move pass Metcalfe to take the final podium position behind Reed and race-winner Villopoto.

Villopoto enjoyed a two second cushion for much of the race, though Reed closed in late. By lap 19 Reed made a pass on Villopoto. Villopoto retaliated quickly, regained his lead and led to the checkered flag.

Ryan Villopoto (Monster Energy Kawasaki KX450F Supercross) says: "The whoops were treacherous tonight. I knew it was important to be consistent every lap. Battling Reed on the last few laps was exciting and I was able to make a good pass. I'm happy to keep the red plate on my bike and am excited for the Dallas race next week."

With his victory, Villopoto now holds a six-point lead over Reed after six of 17 rounds. Dungey is in third, 10 points behind Villopoto.

In the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Dean Wilson, of Menifee. Calif., won his second race of the year and now controls the points lead as the Western division takes a two-month break.

Feld Motor Sports reports that Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda's Vince Friese opened the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class main Event with the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot with Wilson trailing closely through the first turn. Wilson quickly passed Friese and held the lead for the remaining 20 laps.

GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., who controlled the points lead heading into the night, started mid-pack and charged his way to third place, however on lap seven, he crashed in the whoops to surrender his podium spot and points lead. With Tomac crashing out, JDR KTM's Matt Moss moved into third place to secure his squad's first podium of the season behind Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda's Cole Seely.

Dean Wilson (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki KX250F Supercross) says: "I'm absolutely ecstatic with the win. I knew I needed to run consistent laps out there and get through the whoops as fast as I could all night long. Eli [Tomac] is a tough competitor, so it's a bit of a surprise to be in the points lead, but I'm going to work my butt off during the break to try and stay there."

Monster Energy Cup - Congrats Ryan Villopoto for Winning the Million

By petemaster5000 on October 19, 2011 4:06 PM

Congrats to Ryan Villopoto for winning the first ever, Monster Million, at the Las Vegas Monster Energy Cup.

This was the first ever race of it's kind.  The track, designed by Ricky Carmichael, and Jeremy McGrath was new and different.  It had the combination of high speed outdoor motocross sections, as well as tricky, tight rhythm sections like the indoor supercross tracks.

I had a great time watching my Minnesota boy, Ryan Dungey on his first ever race on the KTM.  He finished 1st looking really strong in his heat race, but couldn't quite keep up with the insane fast, smooth, and perfect ride by Villopoto.  RV is absolutely amazing to watch.  He is smoooth as butta, and fast as f***.

What a fun day of racing.  Now we just have 11 weeks until the Supercross season starts at Anaheim in January.

Rest well racers but stay in shape, and have a good break.  See you back at the gate real soon!

Monster Energy Cup Pre-Race Press Event Showcases Top SuperX/MotoX Racers

By petemaster5000 on October 14, 2011 6:55 PM

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (October 13, 2011) - A pre-race press conference was held today at Sam Boyd Stadium to preview Saturday night's inaugural Monster Energy Cup, featuring supercross legend Ricky Carmichael, Best Trick competitor Kyle Loza, Super-Mini competitor Adam Cianciarulo and Amateur All-Star competitor Thomas Covington as well as open class riders Mike Alessi (Rockwell Suzuki), Justin Brayton (Team Honda Muscle Milk), Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM), Kevin Windham (GEICO Honda), Josh Hansen (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki) and Ryan Villopoto (Monster Energy Kawasaki).

Ricky Carmichael:

"This race is a great opportunity for the sport and riders. When you're racing and caught up in the moment aiming for $1 million, we forget about the tremendous exposure this race is getting, which is certainly going to open the door for opportunities down the road for everybody. The sky is the limit with this one."

Ryan Villopoto:

"There are definitely some big jumps out here. We've been testing out the 2012 KX 450F, so we are in really good shape. It's good to go out there and see where everybody is at."

Kevin Windham:

"No matter how much you prepare for a race like this, you just don't know what to expect because it's so different. There are so many sections that can make for some exciting racing. Really, anybody can win a 10-lap event, so it should be interesting."

Justin Brayton:

"To be racing with Team Honda Muscle Milk for the first time is really exciting for me. Winning the $1 million purse would be really neat. We've been doing a lot of testing, and after seeing the track today, I'm looking forward to giving it a shot."

Mike Alessi:

"I feel really good on the new bike and am excited to get it on the hybrid track and see how we do. I definitely would like to take the trophy and million bucks home. As a rider that has to cover most of the finances for my team, winning a $1 million would be a tremendous help."

Josh Hansen:

"It's going to be a good race with some of the greatest riders. I'm stoked about the big jumps and technical sections. With a $1 million on the line, anything goes."

Marvin Musquin:

"I've been practicing on the supercross track with Ryan Dungey testing suspension setup, so I am ready to battle the hybrid track."

Kyle Loza:

"I'm psyched for this "Best Trick" competition. I missed my chance to showcase the "bike flip" because of an injury, so I'm ready to give it a shot. The $40,000 prize is a big deal. Four guys are going home super mad and one is going home amped."

Adam Cianciarulo:

"To be riding on a track designed by two of the sport's greatest riders is in itself is awesome. Mixing in aspects of live television coverage on SPEED and racing in front of a packed house really makes this a great race for a younger rider."

Thomas Covington:

"I've been training really hard at the Kawi track for this race, so we will see how it pays off. I'm really going to benefit from the experience I'll receive, because it's going to allow me to get a feel for what it's like competing in supercross."

The unique hybrid track will consist of supercross/motocross terrain and will have a tremendous motocross-style influence, making it unlike any other stadium race in the world. This track will be the perfect blend of supercross and motocross combined and created into the ultimate battleground. The Monster Energy Cup posts a $250,000 purse, awarding the winner with a $100,000 check, and for the "first time ever" $1 Million will be paid to a rider that wins all three main events.

Motocross of Nations 2011: Saturday's MX action and qualifying

By petemaster5000 on September 17, 2011 6:18 PM

Saturday's Qualifying at the 2011 MX of Nations in France. The Motocross of Nations at St. Jean d'Angely, France is the most prestigious MX race of the year. In today's Qualifying Races it was the Americans: Ryan Dungey (MX1 class), Blake Bagget (MX2 class), and Ryan Villopoto (Open class) all led every lap of their respective motos. USA dominated in an almost unbelievable fashion, thus scoring 2 points for the day.

The Italian team surprised everyone with a second best overall for the day and scoring 4 points. Italy's Antonio Cairoli gave Ryan Dungey everything he could handle in the MX1 qualifier, finishing 2nd on the day behind Team USA's captain. The host country's Team France, finished third overall for the day, with Chrisophe Pourcel finishing 3rd in MX1, Marvin Musquin 2nd in MX2 and Gautier Paulin 3rd in the Open class. They received 6 points on the day. France is one of the favorites to end USA's reign as MXoN Champions.

MXON: Team USA In To Win

MXON: Team USA In To Win

Team USA stands a strong chance of winning a seventh consecutive Motocross of Nations title with Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, and Blake Baggett at the controls.
Media Release  |  September 15, 2011   Saint Jean D'Angely (FRA)

Team USA has arrived in Europe and is heading towards the St Jean d’Angely circuit to prepare for the biggest race of their season, the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations. The three riders Ryan Dungey, Ryan Villopoto and Blake Baggett with managed Roger DeCoster have come for one thing and only one thing, and that is to win the event outright

Team USA will be competing for its seventh consecutive victory at the "Olympics of Motocross", which has been running, without interruption, since 1947. Team USA is the all-time leader in victories with 21 since 1981 and are the heavy favorites this year.

Villopoto and Dungey have been on three MXoN winning teams but never as teammates. The two went to war in these years Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship and it’s the first time since Jeff Emig and Jeremy McGrath battled in the 1996 AMA 250cc Championship that two American riders who were locked in a close class championship battle were chosen to represent Team USA.

"As demonstrated by their performances this summer, these three riders are among the best that the United States has to offer," AMA spokesman Kevin Crowther said. "We're confident they will do their country proud at this prestigious event."

The team event combines the individual finishes of all three riders with each rider competing in two motos. The worst score of the six finishes is thrown out. Even though each country is competing for the Chamberlain Trophy, Villopoto said the event feels like USA vs. The World.

"Once we go over there we have a target on our back as a team," he said. "We've won it so many times and when we go overseas it's their time to show what they have. There's more pressure and it feels like it's us three against everyone else."

Blake Baggett is the lone rookie on the team. With five wins in nine rounds in 2011, the 250 class rider finished third in the AMA MX points behind Great Britain's, Dean Wilson and South Africa's Tyla Rattray. Baggett said he has no idea what to expect.

"Ryan (Dungey) talked to me about it," he said. "No worries, just ride like you do all the time. Do the best you can and it will be ours. “He also said he can't stress the 'all or nothing' strategy of winning this event. "Never give up. Trey Canard crashed in both of his motos last year. He could have given up and because he didn't give we won it in 2010."

Originally scheduled for September 24-25, the event was moved up one week so it didn't coincide with the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The September 17-18 weekend falls just one week after the conclusion of the AMA Motocross Championship at Pala Raceway, giving Team USA a logistical obstacle to overcome in preparation. "It's going to be a quick turnaround," Dungey said. "I think we're going to have to ship bikes before the season is over with. It's quick but nothing we can't handle."

The last time the event was held in Saint Jean D'Angely, France, in 2000, Team USA won with Ricky Carmichael, Travis Pastrana, and Ryan Hughes representing.

Pala 450 Motocross Moto 2 Results 2011

Ryan Villopoto has put himeslf in prime territory for another title this year after taking the lead in the 2011 AMA Motocross series.
Ryan Villopoto claimed his first 450 Motocross title by finishing second overall at Pala Raceway.

Moto 2 in the 450 class looked much like the first. Ryan Villopoto and Ryan Dungey didn’t learn their lesson well enough in Moto 1 and lined up too far to the inside on the gate which left them battling to be inside the top-10 on the start. However, this time Chad Reed didn’t crash out and the TwoTwo Motorsports rider was fighting for the holeshot and quickly into the lead.

Justin Brayton had a good start and ran up front early for the JGR Yamaha team, but Honda’s Justin Barcia took over the runner-up position on Lap 2. Barcia continued to chase Reed who was looking more like his early season form until Lap 7 when he lost the rear end and went down in a corner. The small crash allowed Barcia to slip past and Dungey to pull up on his rear wheel. Reed couldn’t hold off the defending champion who was doing everything in his power to win the moto and put himself in the best possible position for a miracle championship.Reed gave way to Villopoto two laps later and would finish the moto in fourth. Combined with 12th in Moto 1, he would finish 7th overall.

Instead of pushing through to the finish, RV2 wisely backed down his pace and let the two frontrunners get away. Meanwhile, Dungey was in a battle for the overall win and he sealed the deal with two laps to go. Barcia finished second with the new 450 class champion a distant third.

“We started off this outdoor season way behind,” said Villopoto. “It’s been a hell of a year.”

Ryan Dungey shown nearly captured the opening moto victory from home-crowd favorite Ryan Villopoto.
Ryan Dungey won the overall, but it wasn't enough to retain his 450 crown.

Dungey’s teammate Brett Metcalfe had another strong ride in fifth which gave him fourth overall, just behind Barcia who trailed the Ryans with a 3-2 moto tally. Mike Brown finished 15th in the last moto on his KTM – not bad for an old moto guy-turned off-roader.

“I’m really happy to end it out with a win,” said Dungey as he watched Villopoto collect the #1 plate. “It was a long-fought season. That’s what it’s about, that’s what racing is about. We train our butts off. Congratulations to the whole Kawasaki crew, Ryan Villopoto. It was a joy racing them all year. There was nothing I had to worry about, we could just fight each other clean. Let him taste a little bit of this victory like I did last year.”

AMA Motocross Pala 450 Overall Results:

Suzukis Ryan Dungey could have lost the championship at Southwick if not for his skill and determination.
Ryan Dungey could only manage second in the opening moto. He will need a miracle in Moto 2.

Chad Reed had a crazy start as he got a solid launch and then headed straight for the left sideline, weaving all the way over to the inside and cut off both Ryan Dungey and Ryan Villopoto. Reed would crash moments later in the first turn and wound up 31st at the end of Lap 1. Mike Alessi emerged with the holeshot on his Red Bull KTM with Colton Facciotti in second aboard his Lucas Oil TLD Honda. Alessi would lead for the first three laps before Justin Barcia took over the point position.

Dungey and Villopto were buried off the start and the Monster Kawasaki rider was happy to follow Dungey around for the opening lap. Dungey started picking off riders but spun out in a flat corner and RV had no choice but to go around. The Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider immediately surged by again. A couple laps later he would again make a mistake that allowed the #2 bike to slip past but Villopoto had a big scare when his right hand popped off the handlebar on a big double jump and Dungey went back past.

“Chad came over on us really hard and we were in the back,” said Villopoto. “It’s dicey back there. All those guys are fighting for a spot and a position to do well. Me and Ryan (Dungey), we’re both trying to stay out of trouble. It gets a little hairball.”

The madness would eventually sort itself out as they pulled up on Alessi’s rear wheel and started battling for the runner-up position. Out in front was Justin Barcia who was putting down the fastest laps on the track. Alessi did a masterful job of holding off the points leader but eventually succumbed to the pressure and seemed to have spent his reserves on fighting his old nemesis as Dungey quickly worked around the KTM 450 SX-F.

Hondas Justin Barcia had a great debut ride in the 450 class despite a heavy collision with Ryan Dungey in Moto 2.
Justin Barcia led for much of the race before giving way to Ryan Villopoto and Ryan Dungey.

Villopoto continued to increase his pace and cut Barcia’s lead in half with 7 laps remaining. He would pass Barcia and inherit the lead on Lap 12. Dungey knifed into second place with two and a half laps remaining but his only hope at that point was to stay close enough in the points that something might happen in the final moto as RV claimed the moto win.

“I didn’t get out to the best start there and that didn’t help us out much,” said Dungey. “I felt good and I’m just really looking forward to Moto 2. All we can do is go out there and give it our best.”

Following a two-week break, the 2011 AMA Motocross Championship convened Saturday at New Berlin, N.Y., for the Rockstar Energy Unadilla National, Round 9 of 12.

Before a massive crowd typical of the historical Unadilla track, the finishing order in both motos was the same, with Monster Energy Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto dominating.

Joining Villopoto on the podium in both motos was the reigning AMA Motocross Champion, Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey, and the man who made his 450 debut this weekend, American Honda's Justin Barcia, respectively.

As for the rider who dominated most of the Motocross season, Two-Two Motorsports Honda's Chad Reed, the Australian had a 4-5 moto finish, taking fourth overall.

In Moto 1, Villopoto followed New York native Barcia out of the gate, and passed him on lap 7. From there on Villopoto wasn't challenged again, taking the win with Dungey in tow, Barcia in third.

The second moto occurred in a simliar way, Villopoto now chasing KTM's Mike Alessi for the lead. On lap 3, Villopoto took Alessi on lap three, and wasn't challenged again.

With his wins, Villopoto extends his Motocross championship lead to 391 points, seven ahead of Dungey. Reed remains in third, with 366 points.

And Villopoto swept both motos on his birthday weekend.

Ryan Villopoto (Monster Energy Kawasaki KX450F) says: "It was definitely a good day. The team and I made the decision to go to 2012 Kawasaki for this weekend, and it was definitely the right move.

"Knowing what we had was a lot better, I felt like we were in a great position to win today. I got good starts and was able to work my way through the field. It seemed easy to get by guys. I don't know if it was the bike, or my confidence, but it's put us in good position for the championship."

Ryan Dungey (Rockstar Makita Suzuki RMZ450) says: "I fought it a bit today. I didn't get the start I needed in either moto. I had to battle through guys, and once I got into second, I couldn't make the time up on Ryan (Villopoto). We're looking forward to the next three races, and battling for this championship."

The 2011 AMA Motocross Championship continues Aug 27 in Southwick, Ma.

The 2012 Kawasaki KX450F features many upgrades to an already championship-winning bike including improved chassis performance and enhanced ergonomics. The Monster Energy Kawasaki race team was able to make the switch to the newer bike since the release of the new model came out in early June.

“We could tell right away that the guys were comfortable on the bike and after successful testing over the break, we decided to go ahead and race it,” said Motocross Team Manager Mike Fisher. “Having the option to go to the 2012 KX450F gives us an advantage over our competition to utilize the latest technology that has been provided to us by Kawasaki.”
